When You Know You Need a First Aid Training Refresher

I had a bit of a scare the other day – someone got mugged in the street and lay unconscious. I was the closest to the scene – and I didn’t know whether to chase after the smack head and lamp him one, dump his butt on the pavement and wait for a police car or to help the victim who was motionless.

My priorities were in the right place and I took care of the victim. I checked her pulse, whether she was still breathing (she was quite old).  She still lay unconscious so I racked my brain and thought – what is the recovery position? I knew it had changed since I last did my First Aid training back in 1995 and was a bit uneasy as what to do. I didn’t want to be responsible for this poor lady to drown in her own vomit, or bite her tongue off during a fit etc. The police and ambulance came and I gave a statement – she regained consciousness and had bruising on her head, was very shaken and in shock but otherwise OK.

This incident made me realise how much I didn’t know about basic first aid. How easy it is to be negligent and incapable of saving a life that could otherwise have been. It shook me up! I did a bit of research on line and refreshed my memory on the key things to be aware of when facing a casualty. I’ve requested First Aid course refreshers at work and have found the people who run the training courses for these First Aid Courses to be very helpful indeed for our circumstances. Our staffing has to remain in-house – there is not a day that goes by where we can take off and go to a conference room for any first aid cources – and some of the training providers are above the budget restraints that we have. The online first aid training seems extremely comprehensive, is updated frequently to adhere to Governmental and medical guidelines and is accessible enough for us all to complete at a time to suit us!
