Dreaming of Oral Excellence and Orthodontic Treatments

My kids got huge gaps in his teeth – he’s only 8 months. I’ve been told that many children are advised by at least the age of twelve that they might require dental braces.

When do you start taking your child to the dentist? I already have – Unit 2 has had 2 visits alreay – we get free checkups for them as I have to go so regularly for my knackedtuttipegs. Honestly my teeth are in serious need of some cosmetic treatment – I’d love to book in at www.dentureexcellence.co.uk and say “rip em out!”, “let’s please replace them with some diamond encrusted pillars of beauty!”

I really should be referred to an orthodontic specialist.  My current dentist, whilst professional, qualified and a genuinely thoroughly nice bloke just can’t cut it on the products fron – his services are second to none – but his impants, bridges and fixtures are cheap ‘made in china’ stuff. Dentists like Harley Street or Denture Excellence who specialise in orthodontics will be able to help me get a perfect smile.  The reason why Unit 2 child might be referred to orthodontics by my current dentist is because the teeth are not growing straight. At the minute it is too early to tell, but we are keeping an eye on it, so I won’t hold my breath – (no I’d rather you suffered halitosis on my behalf) But when I get my teeth sorted I’ll have nice fresh breath, a wide cheesey grin, and sparkly teeth that make the surfaces on the Cillit Bang advert look like a grease tray. Here’s to dreaming about nice teeth with no holes!

The Different Types of Dental Implants

There are several different types of dental implant available with each one being suitable for a particular function. The majority of implants are manufactured from titanium or a titanium alloy, such materials are not generally rejected by the body’s immune system and extremely effective at integrating with bone tissue.

Endosteal Implants
Endosteal implants are by far the most common type of dental implant used today. They come in the form of a small titanium screw which is designed to function in a very similar way to a natural tooth root. They are positioned in the jawbone in patients who have an adequate width, depth and density of bone. In instances where there is an insufficient amount of bone, a bone graft may be carried out prior to the implants being placed to provide a sufficient level of bone.

Plate Form Dental implants
Plate form dental implants are generally used if the bone is very thin. In such cases, Endosteal implants may not be suitable and it may not be possible to carry out a bone graft. This type of dental implant consists of a flat and long titanium plate which is fitted into the bone. Following the administration of a local aesthetic, the dental surgeon will uncover a region of jawbone and start preparing the jawbone to fit the contours of the implant. The quantity of incisions made will is determined by how many implants are going to be inserted. The plate implant is closely fitted into place and the gum tissue will be sealed with a number of stitches. As with endosteal implants, a healing period is typically required to allow the implants to integrate with the bone.  However, some types of plate form implants are specifically designed to have the abutments and crowns fitted immediately; in such cases this is know as ‘immediate placement’.

Subperiosteal Implants
This type of implant is used when the patient has an extremely advanced level of jawbone loss in instances where the jaw is not wide enough and/or high enough to accept endosteal or plate form variants of implants. Subperiosteal dental implants are individually made to perfectly fit between the gums and the jaw bone. There are 2 main surgical techniques for placing subperiosteal implants

The first method – which is known as ‘dual surgery’ – involves the dental surgeon making incision to expose an area of the jawbone and making an impression; this is usually carried out under a local aesthetic. The impression is then sent to a dental laboratory so that a bespoke implant can be manufactured which will perfectly fit the jaw. On the next appointment, the dentist will expose the same area of jawbone again and put the implant in place. Stitches are used to close the gums and the prosthetic teeth are attached. (more…)
